Here's the second demo selected by the Rose Garden Coffeehouse as a finalist in their 2010 songwriting contest. I wrote this last January or so. The original kernel came to me while jogging on Teawaddle Road and an old tree stump caught my eye.
Snow-covered barnyard
You don't have to look hard
To see the old tree stump
An axe with the handle up
It used to be a chopping block
Now it's a slide where kind words roll off
Spared from the knife
Geese praise life
Safe and sound the ducks
Rejoice thunderstruck
Mercy is a dangerous thing
Mercy is a dangerous, dangerous thing
Mercy is a dangerous thing
Once you start, you'll never stop forgiving
Forgiving, forgiving, you'll never stop
Burgundy marks the spot
Where the blade met the heart
Soft furry green moss
In a million thoughts I got lost
So baby, don't you grieve
There's a garden now where the hanging tree used to be
Mercy is a dangerous thing
Mercy is a dangerous, dangerous thing
Mercy is a dangerous thing
Once you start, you'll never stop
Mercy is a dangerous thing
Once you start, you'll never stop forgiving
Forgiving, forgiving, you'll never stop
You'll never stop
